it takes special people to have hope.
it’s not easy – when a teen mother you’ve been supporting and mentoring to for 3 years gets pregnant again. do you give up?
these people, these volunteers, they have a vision…they have hope that keeps trying, even when it seems futile.
imagine, not doing anything…the culture seems impenetrable. if we do not have hope, the least we can do is to help support those who do. those who are giving more than their job requires, those who are connecting to the hearts of these women – hoping to make a difference.
what was that Horton says? – a person is a person no matter how small. think about that in terms of impact (an impact is an impact, no matter how small) hope. effort. and peas. you believe it when it’s peas.
thank you volunteers for your faith and hope, impact, and effort.
no matter how small.
to help support the cause that these volunteers and mentors are working towards through YoungLives Tallahassee:

I hope you will all support this project – around you, here, there, wherever you are….education of our students, our children, and those less fortunate.
One way is to support those who are teaching children in our community about growing food – here’s one way -
contribute your time, or money, or whatever you think might facilitate these growers. www.damayan.org “nourishing communities one garden at a time”

you really can make an impact. i’ve seen the teachers, i’ve seen the kids. they need healthy snacks, they need sight words, they need resources. have an extra stack of index cards laying around. or didn’t use all 200 in that last stack you bought at the dollar store?
how about downloading the Dolch Primary Sight Words list here or just writing down a set of color words on them.
not to mention, a box of cereal goes a long way at snacktime.

when you are in danger (or feel in danger) – what’s the first thing you reach for? ok, no, i’m not thinking destructive weapons. i’m talking constructive devices to get the assistance you need.
being able to make a phone call for help is tremendous security.
done with your old cell phones? help a victim of domestic violence by donating it to the Refuge House.

fresh. dirty. doesn’t seem to go together, does it?….but oh, does it.
not only with food. but with people. some weathered, gifted botanists decided to share their gifts with some fresh, new soil – or kids. however you see it.
there are several gardens throughout the city – different people give their time weekly to the growth of these gardens – and the children that frequent them. (neighborhood kids)

i wish i could say it was on purpose that yesterdays post never made its appearance…you know, as a statement of how things are out of sight/out of mind, and how we should try to keep certain things in sight/in mind, even when they’re out of sight… but it wasn’t on purpose….
however, recognizing that things that are in sight are easier to learn and remember….there are many classrooms of children who do not have sight words….which are a very important part of learning to read. they recognize these words because they are practiced over and over in the classroom, and then sometimes (resources willing) the primary school children will get flash cards to take home. it wouldn’t take long to make a set – focused on colors, or numbers, or just primary sight words (”Dolch Primary Sight Words” for googlers). and it would help a child learn to read! what better impact could you make?
keep these children in sight/in mind and help them learn to read by keeping words in their sight.
To donate sight words and other learning resources, please contact Christen at email: cannonc@cisfl.org phone: (850) 201-9758.

they were overpopulated, with homelessness, lack of job creation BEFORE.
just recovering from tragic flooding in 2008.
NOW? they have an even longer road of recovery ahead.
Yes, Haiti needs your help now, but it doesn’t stop there, and it didn’t start here. Haiti needs human touch. in this virtual world, we are connected to tragedy by our sight, but our hands remain clean. there are others who are able to go there, to offer relief, as others may not be able or willing. i encourage you to support those whose hands have touched more than a keyboard in this crisis, and whose eyes have seen firsthand the tragedy we browse. a dollar goes a long way in a developing country. give what you can, whether it is fervent prayer or financial aid. be sure your donations are to organizations who actually know the needs of the country and have Haiti’s best interest at heart. I can assure you this one does.
in the past 2 years I have consulted on projects in Haiti along with two dear friends and mentors – one of which is Haitian. they have spearheaded an organization (prior to, and now responsive to the tragic earthquake) called Powered by Action.
Powered by Action and the Carma Foundation have united to establish the Action Haïti – Earthquake Relief Campaign. This campaign has one simple goal – to get the necessary first aid/medical supplies, water, food and clothing to those impacted in Haïti. To support this effort by acting now you can make a donation to the Earthquake Relief Campaign. Your contribution will go DIRECTLY to funding the procurement, transport and delivery of materials to Haïti.
Powered by Action and the Carma Foundation will keep you informed of the efforts of the Earthquake Relief Campaign. As a registered member of Powered by Action, you will also be able to view the campaign donations and utilization of funds via the Powered by Action website.
go to www.poweredbyaction.org and click on the Action Haïti: Earthquake Relief Campaign link.
06.11.09 - 09:21Jenny Weinberg - I am so glad you took this day to bring awareness to the issues in Haiti. I think sometimes we forget the power of just one dollar... it means a lot more in these poor, poor places. Thank you for reminding us.
06.11.09 - 09:45jessica - what a powerful image, especially when paired with your words, "Haiti needs human touch." thanks for sharing the connection you have to Haiti as well as the encouragement for me to wrestle with how to respond. i lament the human suffering that goes unnoticed or unaddressed by me and by our world. thank you for doing something, however small it may seem to you.
